Brown(1988)认为,按照资料的来源与性质,研究可以分为两类:第一手研究和第二手研究。前者包括个案研究与统计研究,统计研究又分为问卷调查研究和实验研究两种。按照Brown的说法,商务英语研究因此也有第一手与第二手研究之别。Van Lier(1988)认为应用语言学研究的分类可根据以下两个参量来考察:干预程度参量和选择程度参量,如图1所示。
根据以上参量,商务英语研究方法也大致可分为“控制”、“测量”、“观测”、“询问/采取行动”四种类型。与其它研究方法相比,实验法需要严格的干预和控制,其干预程度和选择程度最高。与之对应的行动研究干预程度和选择程度最低,但行动研究完全可以看作是一种有学术价值的研究(宠继贤,1998)。
例如,在商务英语研究中,研究者可以使用实验法验证“浸泡式”商务英语教学法优于传统教学方法之假设。研究者可将研究对象分成两组:对比组与实验组。实验组使用“浸泡式”商务英语教学,让学习者浸泡在真实的商务英语语境中,以提高商务英语学习的兴趣和理解能力;对比组采用传统的语法翻译法教学。对实验组进行干预,对对比组严格控制,这就是实验法。经过一段时间运用测试方法对两组被试对象的商务英语学习状况进行测量,并用相应的统计方法对测试结果进行比较,检验两个结果之间的差异是否显著,便能验证上述假设。
实验研究有其客观性,但在商务英语研究中实验研究存在明显不足。例如,商务英语教学是一个动态的、开放的过程,教学中有些现象或假设常常很难用实验方法来验证
与传统的实验研究相比,商务英语行动研究越来越受教师和研究人员的青睐。
